Carry the one, and see where it went
Regrouping is carrying and borrowing by its classroom name. A wrong answer to 4,003 − 1,258 is almost never a subtraction fact — it is a borrow that did not make it across the zeros, and only the marks over the digits show that.

Start with the ones, and regroup when a column runs over.
An addition and subtraction with regrouping worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Each problem is stacked on quarter-inch graph paper, the standard algorithm set out the way American classrooms write it: one digit to a square, the sign to the left of the bottom number, a line underneath. Choose with regrouping, without, or a mix; addition, subtraction or both; and two to five digits in each number. With regrouping means every problem carries or borrows inside it, and a quarter of the subtractions borrow across a zero. A row over each problem is left for the marks, and the answer key fills it in: every carried 1, and every digit crossed out with what it became.
