Count every stack
A cube drawn with its top and side has to be seen as one cube, not three faces. Counting a column of them is kindergarten counting with a builder's eye — and the start of counting cubes for volume years later.

Count up each stack, then add them.
A counting cubes worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Nine towers a page, each made of three or four stacks of cubes drawn in 3D, with a box under each stack for how many cubes tall it is. The first tower is done. Easy has stacks up to three tall; medium and hard go to four and five and add a box for how many cubes in all, which is adding three or four numbers. New towers every time, with an answer key.
