B – F – C – D – A, and a star appears

Read a letter, find its color in the key, find that dot, draw a line to it. Five times, and the lines make a star — which is how the child knows they read the code right.

How it works
Ages5–9TypeFocus

Letter, color, dot — then the next letter.

A connect-the-code worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. A key at the top gives seven letters their colors, and nine rings of colored dots below each have a code over them. The child reads the code one letter at a time, finds that letter's color, and joins the dots in that order. Pick four dots a ring, five, or six with a code that comes back to its start. Every code jumps across the ring rather than going round it, so the lines make a star or a zigzag, never just the outline — and the first ring is drawn as an example. In the black-and-white print the dots carry their letters, and the answer key draws every shape.

A Connect the Code sheet
1

Read

The first letter of the code, and find its color in the key.

2

Find

The dot of that color on the ring. Put the pencil down there.

3

Join

Draw a line to the next letter's dot, and on to the end of the code.

Dots on each ring

The code always jumps across the ring, so it draws a star or a zigzag — never just the outline. The first ring on the page is done as an example.
