Over one dot, under the next

A straight line joins two dots and the eye only has to find them. A curve joins none: it runs between the dots, and the child has to see where — above this one, between those two, round that one — and put the pencil through the same gaps.

How it works
Ages4–7TypeCoordination

Look where it goes between the dots, then draw it there.

A copy the curve worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Eight cards a page, each with a curve on a grid of dots and the same grid empty beside it. The curve starts at a dot on the left and ends at an arrow on the right, weaving through the gaps between the dots without ever touching one. Pick 3 × 3 dots for one gentle bend, 4 × 4 for a few, or 5 × 5 for a curve that winds up and down and sometimes hooks back round a dot. A ring on the empty grid can show where to put the pencil down. Every curve is new each time, and it is the companion to Copy the Figure, which does the same with straight lines.

1

Look

Which dots the curve passes above, below and between.

2

Start

At the ring on the empty grid, level with where the curve begins.

3

Draw

Through the same gaps, all the way to the right side.

Dots

More dots, more turns: 3 × 3 is one bend, 5 × 5 winds up and down and sometimes hooks back round a dot.
