A line the width of the page, one bend at a time
Copying a small figure is holding a picture in the eye. Copying a long line is keeping your place along it — which dot it went over, which gap it went under — left to right, the way a line of writing goes.

Start on the same dot, then follow the line along.
A copy-the-line worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Each page has three or four pairs of strips, each strip three rows of dots. The top strip of a pair has a line running from a dot on the left to a dot on the right; the child draws the same line through the same dots on the empty strip below. Pick curves, which weave in arches over, between and under the rows of dots like joined writing; straight lines, which go dot to dot across and on the slant like print; or both, taking turns. Bigger dots give three lines a page, smaller ones four. Every line is new each time, and a curve never grazes a dot it does not start or end on.

Start
On the same dot as the line above — the big dot on the left.
Follow
The line along: over this dot, between those two, down to that one.
Finish
On the big dot at the right end, and check the two lines match.
Lines
Curves weave in arches round the dots, like joined writing. Straight lines go dot to dot, like print.
