Count the dots, and see what is hiding

A hundred and forty little counts to six is a lot of counting. It stops feeling like a drill somewhere around the tenth piece, when a heart or a sailboat starts to show.

How it works
Ages4–7TypeMath

Count, look up, color — piece by piece.

A count-and-color mystery picture generator, printable as a PDF. The page is cut into jigsaw pieces, each with one to six dots, and a key at the top gives every number of dots a color. The child counts the dots in each piece and colors it, and a picture of two to six colors appears — one of thirty-two, from a house with a red roof and a sailboat under a pink sky to a school bus, a rocket, a ladybug and a castle, and a batch of sheets never repeats one. Pick the counting: one to four dots set out like dice, one to six like dice, or one to six scattered, so every piece has to be counted rather than recognized. A new picture and new dots every sheet, and the answer key colors the whole puzzle in.

A Dot Puzzle sheet
1

Count

The dots in one piece.

2

Look up

That number in the key, and the color above it.

3

Color

The whole piece that color. Keep going until the picture shows.

Dots

Dice faces can be seen without counting; scattered dots have to be counted. Either way, coloring the pieces by the key brings out a hidden picture.
