Who weighs what?

A family, a dog and a cat, and a chain of facts where each one leans on the last — the kind of word problem that has to be read in order.

How it works
Ages8–11TypeMath

One fact at a time, in order.

A multi-step word problem generator, printable as a PDF. Two problems a page, each about one family — three or four people, a dog and a cat. The first fact gives one person's weight or age; every next fact ties someone new to someone already known: 12 pounds less, 4 times as old, one third as much, as much as Mom and Jack together. Fill in the table. Names change every sheet; the numbers always stay real — a cat never weighs 90 pounds and Grandpa is always older than Mom. Easy uses more and less only; medium adds times and fractions; hard adds sums.
