The white squares are a shape too

A grid and its opposite share no colored square, yet they are partners: where one is colored the other is white. Seeing that means looking at the empty squares as a shape, which is the whole of this sheet.

How it works
Ages5–9TypeLogic

Look at one grid, then find its partner.

A match-the-grids worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Six small grids down each side of the page, some squares colored; the child draws a line from each grid on the left to its partner on the right. Pick what makes a partner: the same grid, the same grid turned on its side, flipped like a mirror, or its opposite, where colored and white swap places. Grids are 3 × 3 or 4 × 4, and the colored squares always make one piece. No grid on the right could be the partner of two on the left, however it is turned or flipped, and the answer key draws every line.

A Match the Grids sheet
1

Look

At the first grid on the left, and where its colored squares are.

2

Change it

In your head: turn it, flip it, or swap colored and white.

3

Match

Find the grid on the right that looks like that, and draw a line.

Partner

Opposite swaps colored and white squares — the child has to see the empty squares as a shape. Turned and flipped never use a grid that looks the same both ways.
