Every answer is a clue for the next

A ring of four equations round a square, and one down the middle; nine rings, joined so a number found in one carries into its neighbor. There is always an equation with just one number missing — the trick is finding it.

How it works
Ages7–11TypeMath

Find an equation with one number missing, and start there.

A math squares puzzle generator, printable as a PDF. Nine rings of equations fill the page, three by three: four equations round the edge of each ring and one down its middle, like 28 ÷ 7 = 4 across the top and 4 × 8 = 32 down the side. Some numbers are left out. An equals sign between two rings means the number on each side is the same, so answers carry from ring to ring. Pick addition and subtraction within 20, within 100, or all four operations with times and divide kept to the tables. Every missing number can be reached a step at a time — the sheet is emptied only as far as that stays true — and the answer key fills every square in.

A Math Squares sheet
1

Look

For an equation with two numbers given and one missing.

2

Solve

It, and write the number in.

3

Carry

The new number along — into the next equation, or across an = into the next ring.

Numbers

Every missing number can be found from the ones around it, a step at a time — no guessing. An = between two squares means the same number.
