Addition mazes where the wrong sums are the ones kids write

Every square holds a sum. Some are right and some are wrong, and the way through is over the right ones. The wrong answers are the mistakes children really make: one off, or ten off from a forgotten carry.

How it works
Ages5–9TypeMath

Only the right answers hold your weight.

An addition maze generator, printable as a PDF. Pick sums to 10, to 20 or to 100 and generate. At every level the wrong answers are one either side of the real total, the slip a child makes counting on; at the two-digit level most sums carry, and many wrong answers are exactly ten off, which is what forgetting the carry produces. There is exactly one route of correct sums from the arrow to the star.

A Addition Path sheet
1

Work

Each square carries a sum. Work it out before you step.

2

Step

Only where the answer written is right — up, down, left or right.

3

Finish

Some right sums dead-end. Exactly one path of them reaches the star.

Sums

To 100 is two-digit sums, and most of them carry — the wrong answers are the ones a forgotten carry gives.
