Line tracing sheets for pre-writing, new lines every time

Rows of roads with a dotted line down the middle, in the order pre-writing is taught: straight strokes from a dot, then waves, then zigzags with corners to stop at, then loops like joined handwriting, then shapes — circles, ovals, squares, triangles, diamonds and crosses, no two alike.

How it works
Ages2–5TypeMazes

One line, and try not to lift the pencil.

A tracing worksheet generator for pre-writing practice, printable as a PDF. Pick what to trace — first strokes, waves, zigzags, loops, shapes, or a mix of all of them in a new order every time — and then how hard: a wide, medium or narrow road, the road with its dotted line or either one alone, and three to six rows. Put pictures at the ends, so the car drives home and the bee flies to its flower, or join the rows into one long road down the page for a child practicing not lifting the pencil. Strokes and shapes start from a dot and go the way letters are taught: top to bottom, and the circle round to the left like an "o". Every row is drawn fresh, so a child never traces the same sheet twice. There is no answer key: the dotted line is the answer.

A Trace the Line sheet
1

Start

At the arrow on the left of a row.

2

Trace

Along the dotted line, staying inside the road.

3

Finish

Reach the star without lifting off. Then start the next row.

Lines

In the order pre-writing is taught: straight strokes from a dot, curves, corners, loops like joined handwriting, then shapes — circles, ovals, squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds and crosses, all different sizes. Mixed puts every kind on one page in a new order each time, always with a row of shapes.

Road

The road is how much room there is to wobble. By shape narrows it as the lines get harder.

To follow

Dots only is closer to writing on a line; road only asks the child to stay inside without a line to trace.

Rows

Start and finish

Pictures: the car drives home, the bee flies to its flower, the rocket to the moon, the mouse to the cheese.

Layout

One long road runs back and forth down the whole page, for a child practicing not lifting the pencil.
