Three numbers, two signs, one running total
10 − 3 + 8 is the first calculation a child meets that is longer than one fact. The skill is holding the total in your head while the next sign changes direction — and getting the middle wrong spoils the end.

Left to right, one step at a time.
A mixed addition and subtraction worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Pick the range — within 10, 20 or 100 — and three or four numbers to a row, and generate. Thirty problems a page in three columns, each with a box for the answer. The range applies to every number the child passes through, not only the ones printed: 7 + 7 − 2 ends at 12 but stops at 14 on the way, so it never turns up on a within-10 sheet. Nothing drops below one, and rows that do nothing — adding a number and taking the same one straight back — are left off.
