Seven is three and four
A number bond is the picture of a number coming apart: the whole on top, its two parts underneath. It is how a kindergartner learns that 7 is 3 and 4 — and, without being told, that 7 take away 3 is 4.

The two parts together make the whole.
A number bonds worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Twelve bonds a page, each a whole in a tinted circle joined to its two parts, with one circle left empty to fill in. Choose the whole — within 5, within 10, or 11 to 20 — and which circle is empty: a part, the whole, or a mix of both. Within 10 the numbers can be drawn as dots instead, set out in rows a child can see at a glance, for a child who is still counting. No part is ever zero, and a split and its mirror count as one, so a page never asks 3 and 4 and then 4 and 3.
1 token a sheet, fewer in batches.

Look
At the two circles that are filled in.
Think
Are they two parts, or a part and the whole?
Write
Put the parts together for the whole, or take a part away for the other part.
The whole
Empty circle
A missing part is subtraction in disguise — 7 is 3 and what? A missing whole is addition.
