One number, written three ways

4,523 is four thousand, five hundred twenty-three, and it is also 4,000 + 500 + 20 + 3. Standard form, word form and expanded form are what the fourth-grade textbook and the state test call them — and a child who has only ever written numbers in words meets "expanded form" cold.

How it works
Ages7–11TypeMath

Read the printed form, then write it the other two ways.

A number forms worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Each page is a chart with a column for each form and a row for each number; one cell of every row is printed and tinted, and the child fills in the other two. Pick how big the numbers are — hundreds, thousands, hundred thousands or millions — and which form is printed, or mix them so each column gets its share. Word form follows the American rules: no "and", hyphens from twenty-one to ninety-nine, a comma after each period name. About a third of the digits are zero, because 40,305 is where these get hard, and the answer key writes every form out in full.
