Hop back three, and land on the answer

A number line turns 20 − 3 into something a five-year-old can do: put a finger on 20, hop back three, and read where it lands. The first row of every page shows the hops, so nobody has to guess whether the start counts.

How it works
Ages5–7TypeMath

Start on the first number, then hop.

A number line worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Ten rows a page, each a problem beside its own number line from 0 to 10 or 0 to 20. Pick subtraction, addition or both. The first row is worked: a dot on the starting number, a hop for every one, and the answer written in — the example that stops a child counting the start as a hop, the mistake number lines are known for. No problem asks for more than ten hops or lands on zero, and the 0 to 20 line uses its top half: every subtraction starts above 10 and every addition ends above it. The answer key draws the hops on every row.
