Count it, then write it

Three apples and two cupcakes is 3 + 2; four stars with two crossed out is 4 − 2. The picture first, the sentence after.

How it works
Ages4–6TypeMath

The picture is the problem.

A picture math worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Eight cards a page, each a picture of an addition or a subtraction: adding shows two kinds of thing side by side, taking away shows one kind with the last few crossed out. Under each card the child writes the answer (3 + 2 = □) or the whole number sentence (□ + □ = □); or, in the matching version, draws a line from each picture to its sentence, where two of every four come to the same answer so the line has to come from the groups. Within 5 or within 10, adding, taking away or both.
