The 5 in 4,523 is worth 500

A digit is worth what its place makes it. "What is the value of the underlined digit?" is how the textbook and the state test ask it, and a child who can name the place but not the value — or the other way round — has only half of it.

How it works
Ages7–10TypeMath

Find the digit, find its place, then say what it is worth.

A place value worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Pick how big the numbers are — hundreds, thousands, hundred thousands or millions — and what each problem asks: the value of the underlined digit, the name of its place, the digit in a named place, or all three by turns. A place value chart heads the page, grouped in periods the way the commas group the digits, and it doubles as the word bank for the place names. Every place in the range is asked about before any repeats, and an underlined digit is never a zero.
