Four sticks and one across

A gate of five is counting by fives before skip counting has a name. A child who sees a bundle as five, without counting the sticks, has the idea — and needs it for every tally chart and survey after.

How it works
Ages5–7TypeMath

Count the bundles first, then the sticks.

A tally marks worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Eighteen to a page: count the tally marks and write the number, draw the tally marks for a number, or a mix of both. Numbers go to 10, 20 or 30, and every multiple of five in the range is on the page, so whole bundles come up every time. A new set each time, with an answer key that draws the marks.
