Seven is five and two more

A ten frame turns counting into seeing. A full top row is five, a full frame is ten, and a child who has looked at enough of them stops counting seven dots one by one and just knows it — which is the step kindergarten math is built to take.

How it works
Ages4–6TypeMath

Look at the frame, not at the dots one by one.

A ten frame worksheet generator, printable as a PDF. Choose what the child does — counts the dots and writes the number, draws the dots for a printed number, or works out how many more dots make ten — and whether the numbers go to 10 or through the teens, where two frames are stacked and the first one is always full. Dots fill the top row left to right and then the bottom, the way the frame is taught; switch to mixed up for a child ready to count rather than recognize. Every page deals its numbers from the whole range before repeating any, and never asks the same one twice in a row.

A Ten Frames sheet
1

Look

Is the top row full? That is five. Is the frame full? That is ten.

2

Count on

From five or ten, count the dots that are left.

3

Write

The number in the box — or the dots in the frame.

The child

Make ten asks how many more dots fill the frame — the friends of ten that adding within 20 is built on.

Numbers

The teens use two frames, the first one full. Make ten always uses one.

Dots

In order fills the top row first, the way the frame is taught. Mixed up is for a child ready to count rather than recognize.
